Gulf Coast Academic Success Center

This center is located on the first floor of the Gulf Park Library (Gulf Park campus). They provide learning assistance, tutoring, and resources in areas of math, science, writing, speaking and language arts. For more information, please call 228.214.3346.

Writing Center

This center is a free service available to any student that wants assistance with a writing project. They offer one-on-one writing instruction that’s designed to help students become more effective writers. Tutorial service is offered on a walk-in basis and by appointment for 45 minutes to an hour per session. However, services do book up – so making an appointment is always a good idea, especially around midterms and finals.

Speaking Center

This center has peer consultants who will help you advance your public speaking skills for speeches, presentations, job interviews, and other off-campus speaking engagements. These services are by appointment only; appointments are for up to 50 minutes. They have practice rooms equipped with visual aid displays, laptops, and video cameras. Additionally, you may schedule a room for private practice.

Student Support Services Program

The mission of this program is to provide academic assistance, personal and academic counseling, and individual support to eligible undergraduate students. Scholars enrolled in this program have exclusive access to individual and group tutoring, educational workshops, and a stimulating climate that will aid in holistic development and success of each enrolled scholar. Group for Organizational and Learning Skills (GOALS) Program

Trouble with Schoolwork? The GOALS program, supported by the USM Psychology Clinic, is a program to teach time management, organizational, planning, note-taking, and studying skills. The program includes a pre-program assessment and 9 group sessions at no cost. A student who participates in all sessions will be eligible for gift cards worth a total of $60. Student Academic Mentor (SAM) Program

Student Academic Mentors are upperclassmen who academically mentor freshmen housing residents. This peer-to-peer program focusses on academic engagement and success at USM. For more information, please contact Druanna Mozingo at druanna.mozingo@usm.edu or at 601.266.4786.

Housing and Residence Life Tutoring

Students who live in residence halls on the Hattiesburg campus have access to free tutoring for general courses and quiet study lounges. For more information, please ask your RA or contact Residence Life at 601.266.4783.

Math Zone

This Math Zone is located across from Cook Library and offers to tutor for MAT 99 and MAT 101 courses weekdays from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. No appointment necessary. If you are on the Gulf Coast, please seek assistance at the Gulf Coast Academic Success Center. For more information, please call 601.266.5824.

 

Math Tutoring Center

This center is located in Southern Hall 318 and offers free tutoring for all math courses, outside of MAT 99 and MAT 101 courses. This includes algebra, trigonometry, and calculus. They are open Monday through Thursday from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm. No appointment necessary. If you are on the Gulf Coast, please seek assistance at the Gulf Coast Academic Success Center. History Lab

The History Lab is a resource located in Liberal Arts Building 458 and is provided by the USM History department to assist undergraduates in HIS 101 and HIS 102 courses. They offer assistance with note-taking, study skills, exam preparation, and historical writing skills. If you are on the Gulf Coast, please seek assistance at the Gulf Coast Academic Success Center. Online students may receive their services via Skype. For their hours or to make an appointment, please call 601.266.4333.

Biological Sciences Learning Center

The Department of Biological Sciences offers to tutor for students enrolled in Biological Science courses. They are in Walker Science Building 149. For their hours and more information, please contact Michael Sellers at johnny.sellers@usm.edu or call 601.266.4748. Gulf Coast students may obtain assistance from the Gulf Coast Academic Success Center.

Chemistry Tutorial Center

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry offers to tutor for students enrolled in Chemistry courses. They are in Walker Science Building 238. The center is open weekdays 9:00 am to 5:00 pm regardless if tutors are scheduled or available. To find out when a tutor is available or any other information regarding the center, please call 601.266.4701. Gulf Coast students may obtain assistance from the Gulf Coast Academic Success Center.

School of Computing Tutoring Center

The School of Computing offers tutoring and academic assistance in Bobby Chain Technology (TEC) in the 207 Computer Lab. The center provides support for all students taking School of Computing courses (CSC), but is especially targeted to assist Freshmen and Transfer students. The center is open weekdays from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. A weekly schedule is posted outside the room which indicates which subject area tutors are available at a given time.

Foreign Language Tutoring

Free language tutoring is available in Liberal Arts Building 110 for Chinese, French, German, Italian, Latin, and Spanish. To find out when a tutor for a specific language will be available, please call 601.266.4964. Gulf Coast students may obtain assistance in French or Spanish at the Gulf Coast Academic Success Center.

Accounting Tutoring

Accounting tutoring by appointment is available within the School of Accountancy in Scianna Hall 3067. For more information or to setup an appointment, please call 601.266.4641.

Business Tutoring

Managerial Statistics (BA 201) tutoring by appointment is available within the Department of Finance in Scianna Hall 3114. For more information or to setup an appointment, please call 601.266.4443.

 
BASE Center – Gulf Coast Business Tutoring

Tutoring for Business course is available in the BASE Center of the Business Complex (Gulf Park Campus). Tutoring for Accounting, Business Writing, Excel (BA 250), FIN 300, MGT 300, MKT 300, and Statistics (BA 201) is available. Statistics Tutoring Center

This center is a free, walk-in, peer tutoring center organized by the Psychology Department. It is in Owings-McQuagge Hall 134. For more information, please contact Tyler Surber at tyler.surber@usm.edu or call 601.266.4177.

Construction Tutoring

The School of Construction has tutoring available in person (Hattiesburg campus) and remotely for online and Gulf Coast students. They are in Bobby Chain Technology (TEC) 223. For hours of operation or more information, please call 601.266.4895.

Physics Tutoring

The Department of Physics and Astronomy offers tutoring throughout most weekdays in Bobby Chain Technology (TEC) 114. Please call their department office at 601.266.4934 for their availability.

Kinesiology Tutoring

The Academic Skills in Kinesiology Center (ASK) in the Kinesiology Building 112 offers tutoring for KIN 301, KIN 308, and KIN 423. Tutoring is available by appointment only. To make an appointment or for more information please call 601.266.5358.

Anthropology Tutoring

Tutoring is available for ANT 101 in Liberal Arts Building 428. Please call the department office at 601.266.4306 for hours of operation.


Department of Child and Family Studies Advisement Center

This center exists to supports students majoring in Child Development and Family Relations in areas academic advisement and excellence. Students can walk-in to Owings-McQuagge Hall 131 or schedule an appointment by calling 601.266.5661. Academic assistance includes paper revision, assistance with APA style, outline formation, brainstorming, and conducting research.
