Faculty First Week

The Office of the Provost invites faculty to submit proposals for Faculty First Week 2020 (August 17-20). Proposals for professional development workshops, presentations, or roundtables can address the topics in the broad categories of technology, service, and/or pedagogy:

PedagogyPedagogy presentations might explore innovative lecture strategies, open-source textbooks, mentoring advisees, making the most of University Libraries, responding to current events, discussing sensitive topics in the classroom, flipped classrooms, visual syllabi, novel in-class activities, and other topics that will inspire enjoyable teaching and mentorship.

TechnologyTechnology presentations might demonstrate ways you have learned to use Canvas in new and effective ways, strategies for using social media for teaching and research, how to raise your profile with a website, how to incorporate interactive tools in the classroom, how to design an effective PowerPoint presentation, how to create assignments students can complete with a cellphone, and other ways of leveraging new technologies in research and teaching.

ServiceService presentations might introduce faculty to University committees and processes that are new or lower profile, unexpected opportunities for service, prospects for engaging the community, service learning projects, ways to lead effective meetings, how to manage a budget, how to develop a speaker series, mentoring new faculty, and other strategies for contributing to the university and the community.

Presentations will be given in sessions of approximately 45 minutes in length. Submissions may consist of one presenter or multiple presenters who collaborate to discuss one or multiple related topics.

Faculty should submit proposals by 5 p.m. on May 1, 2020 through this portal. As the form indicates, proposals must include information on the presenter(s). Proposals will include:

  • a title,
  • an abstract summarizing the presentation (300 word limit),
  • key words,
  • and a brief two sentence description for inclusion in the program if the submission is selected for Faculty First Week.

All faculty who submit a proposal will be notified by June 5, 2020 whether their submission will be included in the 2020 Faculty First Week.
