Reorganization Glossary

Administrative Specialist

Revised title for school staff who are cross-trained in core administrative duties. This position includes staff with spheres of specialization reflected in their titles (for example: Admin Spec for Budgets).

College Curriculum Committee

This college-level committee is composed of chairs of the School Curriculum Committees. It evaluates proposed undergraduate and graduate curriculum changes submitted by schools.

College Mission and Strategic Goals Document

This college-level document aligns the college mission, vision, and strategic goals with the goals of the University.

College Promotion and Tenure Committee

This college-level committee advises the Dean on pre-tenure review and tenure and promotion recommendations through evaluation of program- and school-level tenure and promotion dossiers and recommendations. It monitors program- and school-level tenure and promotion documents to ensure that minimum standards are met. 

College Policy and Procedures Document

College-level bylaws and governance document. The College Policies and Procedures document will focus only on issues that are specific to a college and are not already addressed in the Employee and Faculty Handbooks or covered under University policies.

Combined Program Committee

This committee is housed in the Councils of Academic Excellence. It is comprised of at least three members from the Undergraduate Council and three members from the Graduate Council. The committee convenes whenever joint undergraduate/graduate proposals are submitted and provides an agreed upon proposal to the two councils.

Committee on Committees

The charge to the Committee on Committees is to oversee the committee structures within a system of shared governance. The Committee on Committees is composed of one member per University Standing Committee.  

Councils of Academic Excellence

This body houses both the Undergraduate Council and Graduate Council. It drives distinction and quality in undergraduate and graduate academics and ensures programs meet and exceed national standards. The purpose of the Council of Academic Excellence is to provide recommendations and oversight of the academic affairs of the University, such as degree offerings, curricula, student qualifications, and assessment. 

Council of Directors

This Council includes all school directors. The Council of Directors ensures that administrative faculty have an avenue to communicate with administrators and to serve as advocates for faculty and students. 

Dean’s Advisory Council

This advisory body to the College Dean represents the voice of faculty, staff, students and school-level administrators. Half of its faculty members will be faculty representatives, the other half school directors, and a student representative. It advises the College Dean on and participates in strategic planning for the College. It reviews and provides input on college priorities, planned and ongoing initiatives, and short- and long-term goals. 

Dean’s Executive Council 

 

Deans, associate deans and school directors comprise this committee in each college.

Executive Academic Leadership Council 

The Executive Academic Leadership Council is comprised of the Chairs of Undergraduate Council, Graduate Council, Faculty Senate, Council of Directors, and the Dean of the Graduate School (ex officio). The committee ensures that communications across faculty governing bodies and related administrators are intentional and directed to inform a committees’ respective purpose. 

Initiative 


In Phase 2, proposals approved by the President and Provost in December 2017 entered a revision stage and resulted in initiatives that were submitted to the Provost and President for implementation approval starting in Spring 2018. 

Procedural Committees 


These are university-level procedural committees that govern functions of the University in a specified branch but that do not meet the criteria for designation as a University Standing Committee. 

Proposal


From Phase 1, these were recommendations submitted to the Academic Reorganization Steering Committee (ARSC) in Fall 2017. The ARSC recommended proposals to the Provost in December 2017. 

School Faculty Evaluations Committee

This committee is elected each semester according to governance options outlined in the Faculty Handbook. This committee oversees annual faculty evaluations.

School Promotion and Tenure Committee

This ad-hoc, school-level committee advises the Director pre-tenure review and tenure and promotion recommendations through evaluation of program- and school-level tenure and promotion dossiers and recommendations. It monitors program- and school-level tenure and promotion documents to ensure that minimum standards are met.

Undergraduate Council


Previously known as Academic Council 

University Governing Bodies 


Governing bodies are elected bodies that represent the voices of the entire faculty. These bodies advise their respective University executive officer, and their primary functions involve driving academic excellence and promoting scholarly and creative activity. Further, the administrator with oversight of a governing body will oversee the organization and function of that body, including distribution/archival of minutes, maintenance of bylaws, and charge. 

University Tenure and Promotion Committee 


Previously known as the University Advisory Committee. This committee reviews promotion and tenure dossiers at the University level. 

University Representative Groups


There are three designated University groups charged with representing the interests of faculty, staff, and students in the shared governance of the University. Each of these bodies may submit policy proposals or recommended policy changes to the President for consideration by the Executive Cabinet. Therefore, the President has oversight of the organization and function of these groups, including distribution/archival of minutes, maintenance of bylaws, and charge.
