Joe Nelson Named Principal of the Year

The Mississippi Association of Secondary School Principals has named Joe Nelson Mississippi middle level principal of the year at Pass Christian Middle School in Pass Christian, MS. Designated a state winner in the MetLife/NASSP National Principal of the Year program, Nelson was eligible for consideration to be the National Principal of the Year. 

The MetLife/NASSP National Principal of the Year program annually honors one middle level and one high school winner from each of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and the Department of Defense Education Activity schools. From this pool of outstanding administrators, six national finalists will be named and then two national winners will be chosen by a distinguished panel of judges. The national finalists will each receive a $1,500 grant and the national winners will receive a $5,000 grant. 

As a principal, Nelson has proven success in involving the local community in the life of the school and has shown as astute awareness of current and emerging issues as well as a passion in improving the school's learning environment. All state winners, including Nelson, were honored at a three-day event in Washington, DC, September 18-21, 2013. Event highlights featured a visit to Capitol Hill to meet with legislators and networking with some of the best principals across the nation.
