All students entering the School of Mass Communication and Journalism are required to own an Apple laptop computer. Students on the Hattiesburg campus (that is, all students except those in the film program) will be required to take MCJ 200, Introduction to Digital Media Production, a 2-credit hour course designed to introduce students to computer software they will be required to use as students and as professionals. That course is a prerequisite for all 300- and above MCJ courses. Students must own an appropriate Mac laptop to take MCJ 200.
Most students will want a Mac Book with 8 gigs of Ram, Microsoft Office and the Apple Care warranty. We recommend that students purchase their computers through The Apple Store to receive academic discounts and incentives that may be available.
Broadcast journalism students will need a Mac Book with 8 gigs of Ram that includes access to Adobe Creative Cloud, a video editing software they will use in their broadcast journalism courses, Microsoft Office, and the Apple Care warranty.
Film and media production students will need a Mac Book Pro with 8 gigs of Ram that includes access to Adobe Creative Cloud, Microsoft Office, and the Apple Care warranty. Those students may eventually also want to purchase external hard drives to accommodate the large size of video files.
Recording industry management students will want a Mac Book Pro with 8 gigs of Ram, an operating system of 10.6 or higher that includes Microsoft Office and the Apple Care warranty.
Recording industry production students will want a Mac Book Pro with an operating system of 10.6 (minimum of 8 GB RAM, 16 GB RAM recommended) or higher that includes Pro Tools 9 and a set of studio quality headphones: Sony MDR-V6 or Sony MDR-7506. Students may eventually also want to purchase external hard drives to accommodate the large size of music files.
Students who are required to take MCJ 200 (that is, all students except for those in the film program) will also need to purchase the Creative Cloud Software Package, which will be used in MCJ 200. All applications are available in The Creative Cloud through Adobe.com. Software can be purchased through a monthly subscription by signing up through Adobe.com.
Technology Loan/Financial Aid:
Students who qualify for financial aid can apply for a one-time technology loan to use toward the purchase of the required computer and software. To apply for the technology loan, students should contact the Office of Financial Aid for more details concerning the process. As part of the application process, students can pick up a letter that verifies the computer requirement and their enrollment in the school by coming to College Hall 106.
Though the Apple Care warranty provides students with some protection, we strongly recommend that students purchase insurance to ensure their laptops from theft or accidental damage. We recommend getting insurance through the following:www.safeware.com.
