M.S. Program Requirements
In addition to USM's general academic requirements, admission to the M.S. program requires a bachelor's degree in a science area (or combination of professional education and science), a minimum GPA of 3.0 for the last 60 hours of undergraduate study, and if pursuing a Class AA teaching license, a Class A teaching license is required.
Ph.D. Program Requirements
In addition to USM general academic requirements, admission to the doctoral program in Science Education requires a master's degree, three years of secondary or college level teaching experience, a minimum GPA of 3.0 for the last 60 hours of undergraduate study, and a minimum GPA of 3.5 for all graduate work.
Common Program Requirements
Applicants must also submit verbal, quantitative and analytical scores on the Graduate Record Examination, three letters of recommendation, and a letter describing academic, professional, and research goals.
Applicants are required to submit official test scores for the GRE. The Graduate School prefers electronic test results. Test scores should be sent directly to Graduate Admissions using the University's school code of 1479.
Students who fail to meet regular admission criteria may be considered for conditional admission. Regular status will be given upon removal of specified deficiencies, completion of 9 hours of USM graduate work (600 or above) with a 3.25 GPA (Master's) or 3.5 GPA (Doctorate), recommendation of the student's advisor, and, for the doctoral program, acceptable performance on the written and/or oral qualifying examination.
Information on Applying
Information about the application process can be found at The Graduate School. You must complete the online application for admission through the Graduate Admissions website. The following items will be required as part of the online application document upload process:
- Three (3) letters of recommendation. The contact information for three academic or professional recommenders should be entered in your graduate application. Your chosen recommenders will then be asked to complete an online recommendation process. Please do not send any paper letters of recommendation to the Graduate School or to our academic department.
- A 1-2 page letter of intent with your teaching philosophy included. This letter should be a statement of purpose describing your academic, professional, and research goals.
