The 2013 Southern Miss archaeological field school was held in the Mississippi Delta. The class continued the ongoing work at Winterville Mounds with excavations on the summit of Mound B and in an area of midden deposits between Mounds B and C. The field school also fanned out across the delta, excavating test units on mounds that will be part of a Mississippi Mounds Trail, an interpreted route for people interested in Mississippi’s prehistory that will run from Memphis to the Louisiana state line. Students had the opportunity to work on some of the most spectacular sites in the southern half of the Delta, including Arcola, Refuge Mound, Grace, Mt Helena, Carter Mounds and the Anguilla mound. Already, the results of the field season are changing our understanding of Delta prehistory.
