Staff Operations Manual
What Is the Staff Operations Manual?
This website is set up by staff for staff at Southern Miss as part of the Vision 2020 Reorganization plan. It is designed to function as both a training tool for new staff coming in and a quick reference for seasoned staff looking for shortcuts and increased efficiency.
The site was the brainchild of the Academic Staff Structure Committee. It's designed by Academic Affairs web designer Danielle Sypher-Haley, and maintained by Staff Council. It will work best if all staff contribute. Let us know what's missing, what has changed, or what would be most helpful to you on the site. All feedback will be gratefully received!
Spring 2020 Grade Change Options (Z, P, and NP)
Due to the changes in course delivery necessitated by the COVID-19 (Coronavirus) outbreak, Southern Miss is implementing some new grade options for students for the Spring 2020 semester.
Undergraduate and graduate students will receive letter grades in their spring semester classes, as usual, which will be visible in SOAR at the end of the semester. At that time, however, because of the extraordinary circumstances created by COVID-19, students will have a one-time opportunity to request a grade change to alternative options that will give them credit hours but will not impact their GPA.
USM Students Get Free Access to Barnes & Noble eTextbooks
USM students now have no-cost access to more than 55,000 eTextbooks, thanks to Barnes & Noble’s efforts to help college campuses ease their transition into online learning to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. Through the end of the Spring 2020 semester, students will be allowed free access through VitalSource, which the company has worked with to provide ebooks and digital learning materials since 2016.
Employee Assistance Program
Southern Miss employees now have access to the ComPsych GuidanceResources program, which offers someone to talk to and resources to consult whenever you need them. Call 800.272.7255 (TTY: 800.697.0353) for 24/7 access to a GuidanceConsultant, who will answer your questions and, if needed, refer you to a counselor or other resources. To use the service online, visit guidanceresources.com or download the GuidanceNow app. (Web ID: COM589)
Free and confidential.
New Location for Institutional Policies
Effective Dec. 20, 2020 the University’s institutional policies will be accessible through PolicyStat and no longer available on the current Institutional Policies webpage. Policies will be searchable by name, area, or owner.
Log in using email@example.com and your campus ID password.
Identity theft is real, dangerous, and on the rise. In order to help prevent unauthorized use of your university Microsoft 365 accounts by hackers and other unscrupulous people, all faculty and staff will soon need to use multi-factor authentification when accessing their accounts off campus.
This means you will need both something you know (your password) and something you have (your registered mobile phone) in order to log in when you are not on campus.
Setting it up is simple; learn how here!
