Meet Benjamin Knaack

Benjamin Knaack

What’s your title? I am the Fraternity & Sorority Life Coordinator, Interfraternity Council Advisor.

What does that mean? In this role, I advise the governing council; Interfraternity Council, on best practices and work with community leaders to improve our chapters and membership development.

What is your hometown? Grinnell, IA

Share a bit about your family. My fiancé Taylor is a nurse at Forrest General. We moved to Hattiesburg in June. We have a wild Australian Shephard named Maverick who enjoys fetch and walks (we're still getting used to the Mississippi heat).

What are your hobbies? What’s your passion? I enjoy fishing and golfing in my free time. I also advise the undergraduate fraternity I am an Alumni of at the University of Northern Iowa. My fiancé and I enjoy mobster and crime movies/shows. We also love going to country concerts, so we’re waiting for things to wind down in order to attend some in the future.

When did you first hear about Southern Miss? I’ve known about Southern Miss because I’m a huge baseball fan and pay attention to the College World Series. That’s when I first caught wind of Southern Miss. My cousin’s husband also accepted a professor position a few years ago, just before I began grad school for Student Affairs.

What is your best or most favorite skill or strength? I don’t know if it’s a strength quite yet, but I love finding new recipes to grill. I love the process and most of the time the end result.

What college professor or advisor do you most admire? I admire my previous supervisors who advised our FSL community at the University of Northern Iowa. They have worked and continue to work to build up the community, make bridges for students with various departments, and focus on helping the leaders on campus with a student-first, FSL member-second approach. This has guided my approach to working with student leaders.

What was your major?
BA- Communication Studies: Public Relations
MA- Postsecondary Education: Student Affairs
