Meet Delores McNair

What’s your title? Assistant Dean of Students for Student Outreach & Support

What does that mean? I am the primary advocate and case manager for students needing assistance navigating the University’s administrative processes, referring them to appropriate university and community resources, and advocating for their needs.

What is your hometown? The Hub City – Hattiesburg, MS

Share a bit about your family. I am the daughter of the late Benjamin and Rebecca McNair. The only girl and youngest of six children. Proud mother of three, grandmother of two and friend to many.

What are your hobbies? What’s your passion? I stay active in community service, both at Southern Miss and in the Hattiesburg community serving on numerous boards and committees. My passion is my service to others through Faith, Family and Friends. I am a dedicated member of Sweet Pilgrim Baptist Church and serve on the Communications Ministry.

When did you first hear about Southern Miss? A Hattiesburg native, I grew up learning about Southern Miss and William Carey. However, being most familiar with Southern Miss, I chose to be a Golden Eagle after graduating from Hattiesburg High School. As the youngest and only girl, my mother wanted me to remain in Hattiesburg. My brothers are alumni of Alcorn and Jackson State. Conversations get really heated at family gatherings, especially during football season.

What is your best or most favorite skill or strength? My strength is my faith and the legacy of my mother. My most notable skill is resiliency. Life is hard, but what a fun ride it is. I’ve learned to accept life on life’s terms and adapt to change with a positive attitude.

What college professor or advisor do you most admire? Grateful for the mentorship and wisdom of Dr. Eddie A. Holloway, Dean of Students Emeritus, throughout my professional and academic career at Southern Miss. I admire Dr. Lindsay Wright in Child and Families studies for her advocacy for families, concern for students and ability to balance career and family.

What was your major? Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology and Master’s degree in Child and Family Studies
