Transfer Transition Leaders

Transfer Transitions Leaders are volunteer transfer student leaders in the Office of New Student and Retention Programs who serve as mentors and guides for new transfer students at Southern Miss. TTLs are selected through an application process in the spring semester, attend multiple trainings, and serve as a Transfer Transitions Leader for the following academic year.

Applications Open – Monday, April 3, 2023  
Application Deadline – Friday, April 14, 2023 at 12 p.m. / Noon
Interview Signup Deadline – Tuesday, April 18, 2023 at 5 p.m. 
Interviews – Wednesday, April 19 – Friday, April 21, 2023 
Selection Notification – Monday, April 28, 2023
Fall Mentor Training – TBD

Qualifications

In order to become a Transfer Transitions peer mentor, students must:

• Possess a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher
• Be in good disciplinary standing
• Be classified as a transfer student at Southern Miss
• Successfully complete spring and fall training
• Possess a desire to help incoming transfer students

Responsibilities

• Participate in training events and meetings for TTLs as necessary throughout the academic year
• Meet individually with each mentee in three separate appointments throughout semester and submit a follow-up briefing on each meeting
• Plan a social activity or attend a campus event once a semester with their entire mentee small group 
• Attend at least one Transfer Student Association event per semester

Mentor Outcomes

As a result of their position and involvement with the Transfer Transitions Program, TTLs will:

• Possess a knowledge and understanding of USM departments and resources
• Grow their understanding of leadership and learn how to utilize common leadership practices and skills
• Develop interpersonal communication and counseling skills including one-on-one facilitation, group facilitation, and problem-solving skills
• Build relationships with transfer students, fellow mentors, and university staff
• Experience working in a collaborative team environment
