University of Alcala
International Exchange Program
An autonomous suburb of Madrid, Alcalá de Henares is situated approximately 18 miles outside of Spain's capital city. The birthplace of Cervantes, Alcalá has a population of 200,000 and is home to numerous monuments and buildings that form part of Spain's national artistic inheritance.
The Universidad de Alcalá de Henares traces its origins to the 13th century, when King Sancho IV of Castilla granted a petition from the archbishop of the city to begin a course of "general studies" for the people of that region. Today, the university offers programs of study in more than 25 academic disciplines. The student population is 16,000, and the faculty consists of almost 1,000 professors. Visit the Web site of Alcalá at www.uah.es.
