Welcome to Southern Miss!

Congratulations on your admission to The University of Southern Mississippi! You are about to embark on one of the most exciting, rewarding experiences of your life, and Southern Miss is committed to making sure you have all the information you need to thrive. Here are some things you should do once you've received your acceptance letter and have decided to become a Golden Eagle.

Register for Orientation

All new students are required to attend an orientation before they start at Southern Miss. Orientations are designed to prepare new students for a successful transition to life at Southern Miss, to provide an introduction to campus services and resources, to provide information on financial aid and campus housing, and to guide students through their first academic advisement and course registration experience. Learn more about orientation, and view the orientation checklist here.

Apply for On-Campus Housing

Students are not required to live on campus, but most first-year students do. Living in a residence hall is a great way to make friends, get involved in campus activities, and learn to live independently in a safe, friendly environment. Visit the Residence Life website to view video tours of on-campus housing options, download a printable Residence Life Handbook, or learn more about on-campus living. When you're ready to apply, follow our instructions for applying for on-campus housing, and check out what you should bring with you to your new residence.

Arrange a Visit

If you haven't already visited the Southern Miss campus, we'd love to see you and give you a tour of the campus. If you've decided on a major, we can arrange for you to visit the department, speak with an academic advisor, and even attend a class. Visit the Office of Admissions webpage to schedule a visit.

Choose a Major

Even if you've already decided what you want to major in, we encourage you to explore all your options. We offer over 140 majors at Southern Miss, and you will almost certainly see some majors that you haven't heard about before. . You might just find something new that sparks your interest! If you aren’t sure what you want your major to be, that is okay too. We have people and resources to help you consider all your options and find the best fit. You can change majors any time during your undergraduate career, but you will be advised in the department of your major, so it's good to start with something that interests you. Explore major options here.

Apply for Scholarships

The USM Foundation offers lots of scholarships to incoming students, and you can apply for all the scholarships you are eligible for by filling out one online application. If your ACT scores aren't quite what you wish they were, you might consider retaking them, as many scholarships are awarded competitively and better ACT scores will increase your chances of getting money for college. Learn more about how to retake the ACT here. You will also need to fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) before you apply.

Browse the Student Success Website

At Southern Miss, we want our students to succeed. This website has been designed to give you an overview of all the services we offer on campus. Learn about the academic resources we offer, where to go to get the answers you need, where to park when you come to visit and how to find your way around, how you can get involved on campus, and where you can go for help with personal issues. Once you are a Golden Eagle, know that you will be supported and encouraged by a variety of people and resources from across the campus.
