All students seeking K-12 PE specialization must request a formal application to the professional education program through the dean’s office, College of Education and Psychology.
The following criteria must be met prior to formal application to professional education:
- 2.65 GPA on 44 specified hours of the university core curriculum with an average grade of “C” or better in English composition course (ENG 101 and ENG 102)
- An ACT composite score of 21 or higher, with no scale score below 18; or an SAT of 860 (verbal and quantitative) upon entrance into college; or acceptable scores on the Praxis I: Reading (170), Writing (172) and Mathematics (169)
- Meet a minimum score on the Basic Technology Literacy Examination
- Students must take the Praxis II: Physical Education Content Knowledge (0091) and one of the Praxis II: Principles of Learning and Teaching (PLT) exams and have scores reported to Southern Miss (code #1479) before graduation.
The 44-hour core, First Aid and HPR 1313: Introduction to Physical Education, may be transferred from Mississippi junior and community colleges. Transfer students should take anatomy and physiology as one of their lab sciences in the core.
Transfer students are also encouraged to select elective courses that would lead to a supplemental teaching endorsement.
