LTG Thomas Miller

Lieutenant General Miller was assigned as the Commander, First Army on January 11, 2008. First Army is responsible for the training, readiness and mobilization of all National Guard and Army Reserve units across the United States and two U.S. territories. LTG Miller began his military career as an Infantry Officer who earned his commission in 1973 as a Distinguished Military Graduate from the University of Southern Mississippi. He is the son of the late Colonel William H. Miller, Infantry, a combat veteran of WWII, Korea and three tours in Vietnam.
LTG Miller has served in a wide variety of command and staff assignments predominantly in Airborne and Light Infantry units to include overseas tours in Iraq, Haiti, Korea, Hawaii and Japan.
His key positions include a Rifle Platoon Leader, Weapons Platoon Leader and Rifle Company Executive Officer in the 1st Battalion 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment and a Rifle Company Commander in 2d Battalion 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment--all in the 82d Airborne Division, Operations Officer/S-3 of the 1st Battalion 7th Special Forces Group, Executive Officer of the 1st Battalion 327th Infantry Regiment 101st Airborne Division, Operations Officer/S-3 of the 1st Brigade 101st Airborne Division, Deputy G3/Chief of Operations 101st Airborne Division, Battalion Commander of the 1st Battalion 38th Infantry Regiment, Deputy Chief of Staff/G-3 of the 10th Mountain Division to include operations in Somalia and Haiti, Director of Operations/J3 of JTF180--Operation Uphold Democracy (Haiti), Commander 2d Brigade 25th Infantry Division, Deputy Director of Operations/ J3 U.S. Pacific Command, Assistant Division Commander for Operations 10th Mountain Division, Deputy Commanding General 1st Army, and Commanding General U.S. Army Japan. Prior to assuming his duties as the G3/5/7 of Forces Command, LTG Miller served in Iraq as the Director of Operations, C3, for CJTF-7 and then later as the Director of Strategic Operations, C3, for Multinational Forces Iraq.
LTG Miller’s many awards and decorations include the Distinguished Service Medal, the Defense Superior Service Medal (one oak leaf cluster), the Legion of Merit (4 oak leaf clusters), the Bronze Star and the Meritorious Service Medal (6 oak leaf clusters). He has been awarded the Special Forces Tab, the Ranger Tab, the Master Parachutist Badge, the Air Assault Badge, the Pathfinder Badge and the Expert Infantryman Badge.
LTG Miller is a graduate of the Command and General Staff College, the Army War College and holds a Master of Science degree in Management. His spouse, Mary, is from Monroeville, Ohio and they have two children, Bryan 21 and Kaitlyn 19.
