Major General Jeffrey Hammond

Brigidier General Jeffery W. Hammond is a native of Hattiesburg, Mississippi. He received both a Bachelor of Science and a Masters Degree in Education in the field of Special Education from the University of Southern Mississippi. BG Hammond was commissioned in the United States Army as a second lieutenant in 1978.

     BG Hammond began his career in the 3rd Infantry Division serving as Fire Support Team Chief and Fire Direction Officer in 2nd Battalion, 39th Field Artillery and as the Executive Officer for A Battery, 1st Battalion, 76th Field Artillery. 

     BG Hammond commanded at all levels from Battery to Division Artillery. Prior to attending the Infantry Officer Advanced Course at Fort Benning, Georgia, he commanded Alpha Battery, 1st Battalion, 76th Field Artillery, 3rd Infantry Division in Germany. From 1984-1987, MG Hammond served as Assistant Professor of Military Science at the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. He then traveled overseas to Korea to serve as Personnel Services Officer, United States Army Garrison, Camp Page, Korea from 1987 to 1988. He was next assigned to Ft Stewart, Georgia where he served as the Assistant Fire Support Coordinator, Brigade Fire Support Officer, and S-3 of 1st Battalion, 41st Field Artillery, 24th Infantry Division. MG Hammond was deployed to Saudi Arabia in support of Operations Desert Shield /Storm while serving with 1st Battalion, 41st Field Artillery. 

     BG Hammond’s previous assignments also include Commander, 4th Battalion, 29th Field Artillery, 1st Armored Division, United States Army Europe and Seventh Army, Germany during Operation Joint Endeavor in Bosnia-Herzegovina; Commander, Division Artillery, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas; Executive Officer to the Deputy Chief of Staff, G-3, United States Army, Washington, DC; Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations, G-3, Allied Command Europe Rapid Reaction Corps, Germany; Assistant Division Commander (Support), 1st Cavalry Division, Operation Iraqi Freedom, Iraq; Director of Operations, Readiness, and Mobilization, Washington, DC.

     BG Hammond’s awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal (one oak leaf cluster), the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal (five oak leaf clusters), the Joint Service Commendation Medal, the Army Commendation Medal (oak leaf cluster), and the Army Achievement Medal (two oak leaf clusters), the Joint Chiefs of Staff Identification Badge, and the Army Staff Identification Badge.
