Oboe Festival 2012

Welcome to the Oboe Studio at the University of Southern Mississippi! The students who make up the oboe studio are enthusiastic and dedicated to their pursuit of musical excellence. Students here work hard in an atmosphere of creating and achieving their individual goals, while supporting and encouraging each other. Alumni of the USM oboe studio have successfully auditioned for and continued their musical studies at esteemed schools of music and conservatories across the nation.

For all levels oboists, Dr. Alvarez is focused around a firm grounding of the fundamentals of tone production, finger agility, and successful musical phrasing. These fundamentals are refined through the practice of long-tones, technique methods memorized scales, articulation exercises, Barret and Ferling etudes, orchestral excerpts, solo repertoire, and reed-making. The future or current oboe student will find on these web pages more detailed information regarding audition requirements, courses of study, upcoming oboe-related events and concerts, and links to other sites pertaining to double reeds.
