Oboe Studio

Page Content

The students who make up the oboe studio at Southern Miss are enthusiastic and dedicated to their pursuit of musical excellence. We work hard in an atmosphere of creative  pursuit of  students' individual  goals while supporting and encouraging each other.

For oboists of all levels, the program is focused around a firm grounding of the fundamentals:

  • tone production
  • finger agility
  • expressive musical phrasing
These fundamentals are refined through the practice of long-tones, technique methods, memorized scales, articulation exercises, Barret and Ferling etudes, orchestral excerpts, solo repertoire, and reed-making.

Ensembles

  • Category 5
  • Magnolia Reed Trio
  • Driftless Winds Reed Trio

Performance Opportunities

The School of Music provides oboists with many opportunities to flourish into sophisticated players of the oboe and English horn. Opportunities for performing chamber music are available, and students can also audition to perform in the larger award-winning ensembles. Every year, students in the oboe studio have the opportunity to work with world-class guest artists in master classes.
