Faculty Information - Hattiesburg

While Commencement ceremonies are celebrations for students and families, they are also ceremonial reminders of traditions of the academic institution, and faculty members have an important role.

Parking
All university parking lots, unless otherwise marked, will be open to the public on the day of Commencement. Participants should review the traffic flow details for changes after each Commencement listed under Maps and Parking. See the Commencement Parking map (PDF) detailing available parking areas on campus.

Faculty Check-in and Lineup
Faculty will be grouped by college in the West Tunnel of the Coliseum.  Faculty members will process as a group; then later recess to exit the Coliseum. Please be reminded that personal items may not be secured in the Coliseum; thus, personal items are discouraged.

Schedule for 9 a.m. Ceremony
Colleges of Arts & Letters, Education & Psychology, and Nursing

7:30 a.m.Reed Green Coliseum and Payne Center open for volunteers
7:30 a.m.Hooding faculty check in at the Payne Center gym floor.
7:30 a.m.Doctoral students line up in the Payne Center gym floor
8:00 a.m.Master's, specialist's, and Baccalaureate students line up in the Payne Center gym floor
8:30 a.m.Non-hooding faculty assemble in the Coliseum West Tunnel.
8:30 a.m.Platform party assemble in Payne Center – Oak Room
9:00 a.m.Processional begins

2:00 p.m.Volunteers, floor marshals and standard bearers report to Payne Center
1:30 p.m.Hooding faculty check in at Payne Center gym floor

Faculty Processional
After the students and the platform party have processed, all faculty will march from the West Tunnel to the chairback seating in the Coliseum. Comfortable shoes are encouraged since faculty will be walking through Reed Green Coliseum and navigating stairs to your chairback. Gold chairback seats will be provided for faculty seating behind the students. Faculty members who need special assistance should contact the Office of Disability Accommodations at 601.266.5024. 

Faculty Recessional
Faculty will recess to the East and West tunnels at the conclusion of the ceremony after the platform party has exited.

Faculty Regalia
Faculty participants are required to wear appropriate academic regalia. Faculty members have the option of wearing their own regalia, renting regalia or purchasing regalia through the Barnes & Noble Bookstore at Southern Miss. Please contact the bookstore at 601.266.4381.

Volunteer Staff, Floor Marshals & Standard Bearers
Volunteer staff and Floor Marshals are asked to wear solid white shirts and black pants/skirt to aid students in identifying assistants.  Floor Marshals assigned to the Coliseum will wear regalia during the ceremony.  Standard Bearers will need to wear their appropriate academic regalia for the procession.
