Since 1985, The University of Southern Mississippi – Gulf Coast Research Laboratory (GCRL) has played a vital role through water quality testing to maintain public safety in purchasing and consuming shellfish products from Mississippi waters. This role includes performing tests necessary to comply with federal regulations designed to protect public health. GCRL is the only conforming US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) shellfish-testing lab in Mississippi.

shellfish sanitationWe partner with the Thad Cochran Marine Aquaculture Center for bacteriological studies in oyster/algae aquaculture systems. These studies help establish and grow the shellfish aquaculture industry in Mississippi.

GCRL offers the same testing to the private sector and our scientific colleagues.
