Artificial Intelligence (AI) Policy for the Institute for Disability Studies (IDS)
Effective Date: May 27, 2025

1. Purpose

This policy establishes guidelines for the responsible use of artificial intelligence (AI) at the Institute for Disability Studies (IDS) to enhance training, education, and employment opportunities for youth, young adults, and adults with disabilities while safeguarding against any potential misuse.

2. Scope

This policy applies to all IDS programs, staff, and affiliates involved in any AI-driven initiatives.

3. Principles

  • Empowerment: AI will be used to develop accessible training tools that support independence, education, and career readiness.
  • Ethical and Inclusive Use: AI applications will be free from bias and promote equal opportunities.
  • Transparency and Trust: Clear communication will be maintained regarding AI’s role in programs.
  • Privacy and Security: Personal data will be protected in accordance with best practices and legal requirements.
  • Accountability: IDS staff using AI must ensure that this use aligns with the mission of serving youth, young adults, and adults with disabilities.

4. Implementation

  • Training and Support: Staff will seek out, receive training, and stay up to date on AI best practices, as well as guidance on ethical AI use to ensure effective program delivery.
  • AI Integration: AI-driven tools will be evaluated for accessibility, effectiveness, and relevance to those served on a consistent basis, at a minimum of annually.
  • Collaboration: IDS will leverage AI advancements to improve training, education, and employment outcomes.

5. Misuse Prevention

  • Access Control: AI systems will be restricted to authorized users supporting IDS initiatives.
  • Monitoring and Compliance: IDS will monitor AI applications for ethical compliance and impact on participants.
  • Reporting and Resolution: Any suspected misuse of AI will be reported to leadership for immediate action.

6. Review and Adaptation

This policy will be reviewed annually to ensure alignment with advancements in AI, IDS Policies and Procedures, and evolving needs of those served.
