Institutional Effectiveness


External accreditation responsibilities are housed in the Office of the Provost. Associate Provost Dr. Douglas Masterson and the Office of Institutional Effectiveness are charged with external accreditation administrative duties.

University Councils

The Office of Institutional Effectiveness works with the Academic Council, the Graduate Council, University Assessment Committee, and with the GEC committee to ensure effectiveness required for smooth academic operations in the university.

The purpose of the Academic Council is to provide general supervision over undergraduate academic affairs of the University such as curricula, retention requirements, degree requirements, general education requirements, major, minor, emphasis area, and certificate requirements.

Chair of Academic Council for 2019-2020 is Dr. Max Grivno, USM History Professor.


The Graduate Council determines policies pertaining to graduate education at the university. The Graduate Council reviews, endorses, or recommends the rejection of proposed changes in the graduate curriculum and thoroughly reviews all proposals for additions, modifications, and/or deletions of courses, majors, minors and certificate programs verifying compliance with university policies.
Chair of Graduate Council for 2019-2020 is Dr. Edward Sayre, Professor of Economics and Director of the School of Social Science and Global Studies.


The purpose of the University Assessment Committee is to support the process of continual self-evaluation and improvement across all academic and administrative units at The University of Southern Mississippi. The committee's primary responsibility is to ensure that the institution complies with the Principles of Accreditation for Quality Enhancement published by the Southern Association for Colleges and Schools with regards to assessment as stated in Comprehensive Standard 3.3.1:

3.3.1. The institution identifies expected outcomes, assesses the extent to which it achieves these outcomes, and provides evidence of improvement based on analysis of the results in each of the following areas: (Institutional Effectiveness) educational programs, to include student learning outcomes administrative support services educational support services research within its educational mission, if appropriate community/public service within its educational mission, if appropriate
