University of Southern Mississippi (USM) students will have a special opportunity to learn tips from experts and develop professional skills during the “Experience Business Casually” event set for Sept. 22 on the Hattiesburg campus.

The event will be held from 10:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the Scianna Hall, Lock Commons. More than 250 students are expected to meet and network with approximately 40 volunteers representing 15 companies.

The informal event fosters conversation between students and executives on topics such as handshakes, dressing for success, communication and social etiquette, interviewing strategies, and more. Amy Yeend, Assistant Dean of Professional Development and Career Success at USM, notes that unlike previous events, this year students from all majors across the University have been invited to attend.

“Experience Business Casually is designed to help students develop the professional skills necessary to transition easily from student to full-time career professional,” said Yeend. “They will be able to practice the training and coaching they receive throughout the year at receptions and networking events, in their part-time jobs or internships, in their student organizations, in job interviews, and even in the classroom. These skills will supplement the technical knowledge they learn for their degrees to ensure career success after graduation.”

Dr. Bret Becton, Dean of USM’s College of Business and Economic Development, expressed that faculty and students always look forward to the annual gathering.

“Experience Business Casually is a great way for students to make connections with executives while honing their professional skills in a relaxed environment. We greatly appreciate those volunteering to staff the various stations and help coach our students,” said Becton.
