Students at The University of Southern Mississippi (USM) gained valuable career insights and professional connections during the 2025 Experience Business Casually event, hosted by the College of Business and Economic Development.
More than 130 students attended the event, held Thursday, Sept. 25, in Scianna Hall on the Hattiesburg campus. The experience featured 19 discussion stations led by 43 professional industry volunteers representing 21 companies. The interactive format offered students a relaxed environment to practice career-building skills and make connections with professionals who were once in their shoes.
A highlight of this year’s program was the addition of a station on AI in the Workplace, where students learned more about how artificial intelligence is reshaping industries and the skills needed to adapt. Other stations focused on personal brand, networking strategies, emotional intelligence, and communication etiquette, among others.

“We want to ensure our students are successful not only in the classroom, but also in the workplace,” said Amy Yeend, assistant dean for professional development and career success, who leads the planning of this annual event. “By receiving tips and advice from industry experts, the students are better prepared for their professional lives after graduation.”
Since its debut in 2014, Experience Business Casually has helped more than 1,000 students sharpen skills and prepare to be ready for their careers. Beyond building professional confidence in students, the event has also strengthened ties between the university and the business community, as industry representatives often return year after year to share their expertise, support students, and foster long-term partnerships with the college.

“Experience Business Casually exemplifies the college’s commitment to preparing students for success beyond the classroom,” said Dr. Bret Becton, dean of the College of Business and Economic Development. “By engaging directly with industry professionals in a supportive environment, our students gain the confidence, skills and connections that will serve them well as they launch their careers.”
The event is held during the fall semester so that students can practice what they learn throughout the remainder of the academic year and apply these skills at the semesterly Business Career Fair. During the spring semester, the event is held on the Gulf Park campus, inviting local high school students to also participate as a way to engage them with all Southern Miss has to offer even before becoming a student.
For many years, Southern Farm Bureau Life Insurance Company has graciously served as the title sponsor of the event. Additionally, the college would like to thank Coca-Cola Hattiesburg and Central Mississippi Pizza for their in-kind sponsorship.
