Skillbridge Program

The University of Southern Mississippi Center for Veterans, Service Members and Families recently partnered with the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) SkillBridge program to provide real-world job experiences to military service members transitioning into civilian careers. The program is available at no cost during the final 180 days of a service member’s active duty.

Through participation in DoD SkillBridge, unit commanders at Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi, the Naval Construction Battalion Center in Gulfport, and Camp Shelby near Hattiesburg can help bridge the gap between military service and civilian employment for transitioning service members.

“With SkillBridge, commanders who permit participation in the program can ease the often-difficult military-to-civilian transition period for their troops,” said Cody Abadie, Southern Miss assistant director for veteran and military affairs.

“We’re grateful for this significant partnership with the Department of Defense,” Abadie continued. “We look forward to working with Camp Shelby, Keesler, and the Navy Center in Gulfport to assist our transitioning service members and their families.”

With written authorization and approval from their chain of command, military personnel may be granted up to 180 days of permissive duty to train full time through the university. Those participating in the DoD SkillBridge program will continue receiving their military compensation and benefits, while industry partners provide on-the-job training and work experience.
