The healthcare sector plays a critical role in Hattiesburg’s regional economy in terms of quality of life, jobs, revenue, and investments through daily medical operations and health-related enterprises. Forrest Health, Hattiesburg Clinic, and Southern Bone & Joint Specialists, commissioned The University of Southern Mississippi Department of Economic Development to conduct a study of their overall economic contribution to the region’s economy. These healthcare providers draw patients from a 19-county region and beyond. This economic study revealed that the three service providers contribute an estimated $1.4 billion annually to the region’s economy. The three employers support 10,670 jobs through direct, indirect and induced employment totaling more than $650 million in earnings. The average annual capital investments from construction projects contribute $36.2 million to the region and support 262 construction-induced jobs. The combined effect of federal, state and local taxes total more than $187.5 million annually.
