SCHOLARSHIPS

Scholarships are available to students (singers and pianists) in the form of SERVICE AWARDS.  Music majors, non-music majors, undergraduates, and graduate students are eligible to receive these stipends.  Participation in a major ensemble (Southern Chorale, Concert Choir, or University Singers, all including the Hattiesburg Choral Union) is a primary requirement of these scholarships.  Four or five audition days are held each year to determine awards for the following fall.  Awards are given for each calendar year and are renewable if requirements are met. Scholarships are granted on the basis of the student’s musical ability and potential, teacher recommendation, desire and attitude, and the needs of the student. Awards generally range from $400 to $2,000 annually, good for up to five years, with the higher awards offered to truly exceptional students majoring in music. Awards are made to students of all majors. Out-of-State tuition wavers are no longer offered by Choral Activities.  To be eligible for this waver students must go directly through the Office of Financial Aid.  Students are only considered if an application has been filed by February 1st.  The University of Southern Mississippi provides additional financial assistance to academically talented students. Students with special financial needs should call the university’s Financial Aid Office at 601.266.4774.

VOCAL/CHORAL SCHOLARSHIPS
All vocal scholarships (service awards) at Southern Miss are awarded for participation in two ensembles. Students are required to be in one of the three main ensembles (the Southern Chorale, the Concert Choir, or the University Singers), and all must participate in the Hattiesburg Choral Union. Scholarships are granted on the basis of the student’s musical ability and potential, teacher recommendation, desire and attitude, and the needs of the student. Awards generally range from $200 to $2,000 annually, good for up to five years, with the higher awards offered to truly exceptional students majoring in music. Out-of-state tuition scholarships for over $4,000 each year are also available. Awards are made to students of all majors. The University of Southern Mississippi provides additional financial assistance to academically talented students. Students with special financial needs should call the university’s Financial Aid Office immediately at 601.266.4774.

For best advantage, apply as early as possible as the priority deadline for financial aid is March 15.
