Office of Educational Field Experiences

Student teachers at Southern Miss have the opportunity to student teach locally, regionally, or internationally. The teacher candidacy experience consists of two separate six-hour courses. Each six-hour course represents a student teaching placement in a K-12 school. Each student teacher is assigned a University Supervisor for the entire semester and a Cooperating Teacher for each placement.

Local Area Placements
(within a 60-mile radius of the Hattiesburg or Gulf Park campuses)

Teacher Candidates:

  • Complete the Application to Begin Teacher Candidacy on TK20.
  • Enroll in the two student teaching courses.
  • Prepare for student teaching semester.

Courtesy Placement

For students who would like to student teach outside of the 60-mile radius of a USM campus, they must apply for a courtesy placement. The courtesy placement request must be approved by the EFE Director before it is finalized. Additional fees may be incurred depending upon placement location.

International Placement

This is an invitation to apply for a very special program-the opportunity to broaden your horizons and enhance your future teaching career from a global perspective. All licensure majors who meet specific qualifications can apply to student teach overseas in a Department of Defense Dependents School. At present, Southern Miss elementary majors can also apply to student teach in the London, England area for the second half of their student teaching semester. Teaching in the UK usually is scheduled for the second half of the student teaching semester. Student teaching with DoDDS is a semester-long experience. Applications for student teaching abroad are due every March 1st regardless of whether you wish to student teach in the upcoming fall or the following spring semester. The lead time is necessary to secure placements, and if you meet the requirements, every effort will be made to secure an international student teaching placement for you. If you would like additional information about this unique opportunity, contact Dr. Donielle Stephens in the Field Experiences Office for a personal appointment.

Applications for international student teaching are available on TK20.
