Our Mission

The Office of General Counsel’s mission is, first and foremost, to provide timely and accurate legal advice and information to the administrators, faculty and staff of The University of Southern Mississippi.  In doing so, we aid the University in avoiding or reducing exposure to legal risks. Additionally, we provide strong and responsible advocacy on all legal matters affecting the University.  In fulfilling the mission of this office, we exercise professional competence and independent judgment, avoid conflicts of interest or the appearance thereof, and maintain the highest standards of ethical conduct.

Who We Serve

The Office of General Counsel provides legal advice and representation to The University of Southern Mississippi.  The University and all of its schools and departments are one legal entity.  In that capacity, the Office of General Counsel advises the President, University administrators, faculty, and staff who are acting on behalf of the University on various issues to reach decisions that are in the best interest of the University. The Office of General Counsel does NOT provide legal advice or representation to individual members of the University community on matters of a personal nature or on matters adverse to the interests of the University.
