Coronavirus (COVID-19) Update - May 20, 2020

In an effort to assist prospective students who are dealing with the effects of testing center closures, the Graduate School will be authorizing standardized test waivers (excluding English proficiency exams). Standardized test waivers have now been authorized for applicants to Summer 2020, Fall 2020, and Spring 2021.

Applicants to the Nursing Anesthesia DNP program are excluded from this waiver. In addition, applicants to the Secondary Teacher Education (Alternate Route) and Secondary Education and Teaching (Teach Mississippi Institute) Graduate Certificate programs will have to meet certain eligibility requirements to qualify for a waiver of the PRAXIS II requirement. Applicants to those programs should review the updated admissions requirements on the College of Education and Human Sciences website.

If your program is eligible, a waiver will be applied to your application upon submission.

Applicants to the Secondary Teacher Education (Alternate Route) MAT and Secondary Education and Teaching (Teach Mississippi Institute) Graduate Certificate programs should review the updated admissions requirements set by the MS Board of Education found on the College of Education and Human Sciences website. If you have questions about those requirements, please contact Dr. Jay Howell at james.b.howellFREEMississippi.

In addition to the above, International Admissions will be accepting the International Test of English Proficiency (iTEP) for Fall 2020 applicants, which is currently offering at-home testing. Scores of 4.0 will be accepted to meet the University's English proficiency requirement. Send your test results to the Office of International Admissions at intladmissionsFREEMississippi.

Step by Step Guide to Applying

Admission is competitive and based on a holistic review of the applicant’s credentials by departments.

Graduate Program Information

Application deadlines vary by academic department and/or program and by semester for which admission is desired. Prospective students should contact departments for details.

More about Tuition & Costs

Tuition and fees at Southern Miss are among the lowest in Mississippi, the Gulf Coast region, and the Southeast – particularly for out-of-state students, who may find attending Southern Miss to be more affordable than attending an institution in their home state.

Funding Resources

Students may apply through academic departments for graduate teaching or research assistantships.  Graduate assistants receive waivers for both in-state and out-of-state tuition.  Domestic graduate assistants also have the option of enrolling in health insurance through United Health Care.  International students must enroll in health insurance.  USM subsidizes 50% of the cost of health insurance for GAs.
