Step by Step Guide to Applying for Graduate Study

Application Self-Service Center Portal

You can log back into your application through the Self-Service Center Portal. From there, you can complete and submit your incomplete application, pay your application fee, check the status of your outstanding requirements and letters of recommendation, view your decision letter, and confirm your intent to enroll.

As a Carnegie Higher Research Activity University, The University of Southern Mississippi Graduate School offers nearly 75 different certificate, master's, specialist's, and doctoral degree programs through the Colleges of Arts and Letters, Business, Education and Psychology, Health, Nursing, and Science and Technology. Step 1: Prepare and collect your application materials. (Documents submitted to the Graduate School for application purposes will not be returned to the applicant.) Identify and contact references for letters of recommendation. If you have not taken the GRE or other acceptable standardized test, you should schedule a test date at least 6 weeks prior to the application deadline.  Our ETS code is 1479.

Step 2: Complete the online graduate application. Select the term to which you wish to apply and create your application account or sign-in using your previously created account information. Once you have verified your account, begin your application. Please be aware that you are completing an application for admission to a specific program for a specific entry term.

As you complete your application, make note of the required application materials and prompts.

After submitting your application, log back into your application self-service portal to upload your resume, statement of purpose and other program-specific required documents and to track the progress of your application and other outstanding application requirements. Please be aware that application materials will not be returned to the applicant nor forwarded to other institutions.

Your application must be submitted and the application fee must be paid before the program application deadline.

Step 3:  Request official test scores from the appropriate testing agency.

Step 4: Request official transcripts through the registrar’s office of your previous institutions. The Graduate School only accepts official transcripts for admissions purposes. Transcripts indicating in-progress work are acceptable for admissions evaluation.

Please Note: Admissions decisions are made by the academic unit. Therefore the Graduate School is unable to disclose reasons for denial of admissions. Applicants can submit a signed, written request (in the form of a physical letter) to the program to which they applied. However, units may or may not choose to disclose this information to the applicant. Please see program websites for mailing information.

Application Fee Waivers

 Application fee waivers are available to the following domestic applicants:
  • Full-time permanent employees of The University of Southern Mississippi.
  • Current or former participants in the McNair Scholars program. A letter from your McNair Scholars coordinator will be requested.
  • Active members, reservists, and veterans of the U.S. armed forces. A copy of your current orders or DD-214 will be requested.
  • Recipients of a Fulbright Student Scholar award. A copy of your award letter or email will be requested.
As you complete your application, you will be notified if any of your answers indicate that you may be eligible for an application fee waiver.
