When an academic or administrative unit has information for a website that does not fit within the university's main content management system, Southern Miss can provide space in the form of a web account to install a site on one of the university's cPanel servers.
University cPanel web accounts consist of a username, a password, 1 GB of storage for web content, and a subdomain under usm.edu (e.g. example.usm.edu). The software available for cPanel clusters includes Apache, MySQL, and PHP, hosted in a shared Linux environment. The most common applications used include WordPress or custom PHP applications.
Access to cPanel web accounts under the usm.edu domain is restricted to The University of Southern Mississippi academic and administrative units. A requester must provide justification as to why the content will not fit within the university's main content management system. Eligibility for an account will be evaluated by the Office of University Communications and iTech based on the requested site's importance to the university strategy and goals, adherence to approved look-and-feel standards, level of impact to the university's web infrastructure, and the other technical requirements of the requested site.
Student organizations needing a cPanel account must be sponsored by a faculty advisor who will serve as the account owner.
