Dr. Dennis Wiesenburg, former dean of the School of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences at The University of Alaska at Fairbanks, has assumed the duties of Vice President for Research.

Dr. Frances Lucas was named Southern Miss Gulf Coast Vice President and Executive Office in 2010; in this position, Lucas will oversee the university's operations at its campus and teaching sites along the Mississippi Gulf Coast. She has served in various positions in higher education, including as president of Millsaps College

Rick Duke, a veteran economic development researcher renowned for his expertise in community development, has been named director of the university's Trent Lott National Center for Excellence in Economic Development and Entrepreneurship. He will lead the university's economic development initiatives, including serving as liaison with industry, community and economic developers.

Stanley Sanders joined the Southern Miss family in 2009 as director of the School of Mass Communication and Journalism's Student Media Center. He brings more than 25 years' experience in the broadcast industry to the position.

Dr. Bryan Brister, a Southern Miss alumnus, was named director of the Mississippi Polymer Institute this year; in his new post he leads the institute in pursuing its mission of accelerating the development cycle of polymer products in the state.

United States Army Maj. Gen. Jeff Hammond, a former University of Southern Mississippi student-athlete and football standout, is joining the Golden Eagle athletic staff as a Senior Associate Director of Athletics. Pending approval from the Board of Trustees of the Institutes of Higher Learning, Hammond will retire from military service in September, and begin his new assignment at Southern Miss in mid-October, which will include working in athletic development and fund raising.

Retirements
Dr. Pat Joachim retired as associate provost after leading the university's Gulf Coast operations June 30, 2010, nearly five years after assuming the post a week before Hurricane Katrina struck. While overseeing their reopening in just six weeks after the storm, Joachim has since continued to guide restoration of the campus and teaching site facilities.

After 26 years of service to The University of Southern Mississippi, Dr. Mazharul Haque is retiring from his post as professor in the School of Mass Communication and Journalism, where he has served since 1984 teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in media theory, research, law, ethics, international communication and various other areas.

Obituaries
Carl C. Lawrence, longtime Administrator of Placement at Southern Miss who retired from the university after 40 years of service, died July 10 at Forrest General Hospital. He was 76.

Dr. Charles Hoyle, 60, a professor of polymer science and chemistry at The University of Southern Mississippi, died Sept. 7. He was a pioneer and leading scientist in the fields of photopolymerization and photochemistry and a member of the American Chemical Society.

William Rader Grantham, 79, a former dean of students at The University of Southern Mississippi, died May 4 at Hancock Medical Center. A native of Macon, Miss. and a Southern Miss alumnus, Grantham was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War and a recipient of the Purple Heart. In his 35-year career at the university he also served as dean of men and director of the university union.
