Repertory Dance Company Fall Dance Concert Scheduled for Oct. 28-31

The Repertory Dance Company at The University of Southern Mississippi will present emotionally inspired works by faculty and students Oct. 28-31 in the Mannoni Performing Arts Center on the Hattiesburg campus.
The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. each night. A Sunday matinee performance includes a pre-show talk with the choreographers at 1 p.m. where they will share the ideas behind their dances.
“Here at Southern Miss we are going a little bit deeper to make artistic expression not only of the faculty, but of the students,” said Stacy Reischman, director of the dance program. “This is a different kind experience to devote yourself to what this dance is expressing and how you can communicate that through movement invention.”
“Om,” a dance that explores the challenges of meditation was choreographed by the newest dance faculty member Elizabeth Lentz. The dancers in this work hum to create a calm environment.
“Clutching For,” a quartet created by faculty member Kelly Ferris Lester, investigates the need to connect with others in daily life. Sharp movements, inventive partnering work and unexpected moments of stillness show the need for community. Together, Lester and dance faculty member Meredith Early choreographed and will perform a duet titled “Space in Between,” which is a blending of their movement styles.
In “The Want/Wait Cycle,”Early choreographed a trio that explores the potential of energy in active and inactive states. “This dance is about being able to do anything, yet not always choosing to do it,” Reischman explained.
Four student works, selected through a rigorous evaluation process, will also be presented in the concert. Kristina Hazelbaker, a junior performance choreography major from Slidell, La., created “L-N-K-D” which brings to life the rebuilding of relationships through balance, counterbalance, and the difference between strong and weak links.
Lee Brooks, also a junior dance education major from Columbus, Miss., is presenting “Un4seen Intrusion,” a piece that changes the stage space into an “out of this world “environment” inhabited by unknown beings.
Senior dance performance and choreography major Cheryl Cornacchione from Magnolia, Miss. captured the idea of getting rid of negative emotions. Anjuli Trbuza, a dance performance and choreography major from West Palm Beach, Fla. choreographed “lucid,”a dance that shows a journey into the dark, dreamy state of asleep.
