Southern Miss Career Services Hosts Law-Themed Panel Discussion

The University of Southern Mississippi Office of Career Services hosted its second “Careers in Law” panel discussion on Wednesday, Oct. 20 in the Thad Cochran Center.
The event was designed to educate students about the admissions process to law school as well as career opportunities in the law profession.
The panel was held in conjunction with the office's annual Fall Career Fair, an event that hosts more than 85 employers every year looking to recruit Southern Miss students as potential employees and interns.
Arthur S. Lumzy, Jr., Career Services' Manager of Career Counseling who coordinated the event, noted that all of the attorneys who served as panelists, as well as a member of the admissions panel, were Southern Miss graduates.
“The event was definitely a success,” said Lumzy. “We wanted to host this event so we could expose students to the law admission process, how to survive law school and how one might utilize their law degree in an open forum.”
Among the panel members were attorneys-at-law Moran M. “Randy” Pope III, Gay Polk Payton, and Joe Stevens, all of Hattiesburg. Southern University Law Center student Ebonnee Rhodes, Mississippi School of Law student Jamie McKercher and Tulane University School of Law admission coordinator Carol O'Hea were panel speakers as well.
Jeremy Hosey, a senior political science major at Southern Miss, said the panel was very beneficial to students. Hosey plans to attend law school in the future.
“It was very helpful; I'm really interested in the admissions process for law school so I was able to ask the speakers a lot of questions for my personal gain,” said Hosey, a Laurel, Miss., native. “They answered every one of my questions, and I feel like I gained a lot of insight into what they deal with as admissions counselors.”
“This law panel discussion was an invaluable experience,” said Ashley Betts, a junior finance major from Meridian. “So many times we are only able to hear from law school recruiters, but this panel gave us the opportunity to hear from current law students and experienced attorneys and gain knowledge on the real law school and career journey.”
“Career Services has many more events like this in the works,” Lumzy said. “We want to give students every possible opportunity to get connected to the fields they are interested in.”
