Southern Miss Representatives Attend Entrepreneurship Conference

James Wilcox and David Bell, both representatives of the Southern Miss Center for Economic and Entrepreneurship Education (CEEE), had an opportunity to learn more about business development and job growth as part of a regional conference Oct. 26-27 in Atlanta, Ga.
Wilcox is a staff member with the CEEE, while Bell is a graduate student in the Southern Miss economic development master's programs. The conference, titled “Small Business, Entrepreneurship and Economic Recovery: A Focus on Job Creation and Economic Stabilization, was co-sponsored by the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta, the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas and the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation.
“The overarching view on small business at this conference was a great way to evaluate our own stance on small business support practices in our own region,” said Bell. “I look forward to applying others' research to complement our own business views.”
Universities and organizations represented through scholarly research presentations included among others the World Bank, U.S. Census Bureau, U.S. Small Business Administration, U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, Rutgers University, Syracuse University, University of Illinois-Urbana-Champagne, Carnegie Mellon University, New York University, Rochester Institute of Technology, University of South Carolina, University of Maryland-College Park, Georgia State University, University of Notre Dame and Clemson University.
The conference sessions provided theoretical papers and policy recommendations on various topics impacting entrepreneurship. Presentation topics included local business support programs, loan and credit availability, bankruptcy law, minority and woman entrepreneurship, eminent domain and university roles in business development.
