Student Health Services Offering Healthy U Program for Students, Employees

Emboldened by the slogan “Health Starts Here,” officials with Student Health Services at The University of Southern Mississippi have planned an entire day devoted to campus wellness.
The Healthy U program will be held from 8 a.m.-noon and 1-4:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 14 at the Bedie Smith Clinic on the Hattiesburg campus. It is based upon benefits offered as part of the State and School Employees' Health Insurance Plan. Clinic physicians, nurses and other staff personnel will administer screenings and exams covered by insurance. Screenings such as blood pressure, cholesterol, pap smear, urinalysis and more will be provided at no cost to patients who qualify. Flu vaccines will also be available at this time.
“This is the first time we've put together an event of this kind,” said Jodi Ryder, health education and promotion coordinator. “There is a need for a healthier campus, not just for students, but for employees. We feel it is an important part of a students' education to teach them to live healthy as they transition into adult life.
“Student Health Services also needs to reach out to faculty and staff to be healthy not only so they can have a better quality of life, but to be a good example of health to students.”
Clinic officials will offer referrals for exams that cannot be administered on site such as mammograms and colonoscopies. Ryder also notes that the program will include door prizes, free massages and important health-related information.
