Dog Intelligence Topic of Science Caf Scheduled for Sept. 19 at Cook Library

How Smart Are Dogs? That's the focus of the next fall 2011 Science Café Series presentation at The University of Southern Mississippi's Cook Library, set for Monday, Sept. 19 at 6 p.m., room 105 A. Admission is free.
Dr. Stan Kuczaj, professor of psychology and director of the Southern Miss Marine Mammal Behavior and Cognition Laboratory will be the presenter for the program. New discoveries reveal that dogs are smarter than we ever thought, with a brain resembling our own in ways not considered before.
“Although dogs have been man and woman's best friend for ages, only recently have we begun to understand the thinking processes of canines,” Kuczaj said. “For this Science Café, we'll consider and discuss selected aspects of dog cognition.”
A Science Café's casual meeting place, plain language, and inclusive conversation create a welcoming and comfortable atmosphere for people who may have little or no science background. Each meeting is organized around an interesting scientific topic where a scientist gives a brief presentation and shows a short video clip to kick off the discussion.

Monday, Oct. 24, 6 p.m. Cook Library room 105A
Topic: Autism
Presenter: Dr. Timothy Morse, associate professor in the College of Education and
Psychology's Department of Curriculum, Instruction and Special Education (CISE) and
director of the Training Autism Project, will look at how researchers have begun to
zero in on genes that may be responsible for autism.
Monday, Nov. 28, 6 p.m. Cook Library, room 105A
Topic: “Making Stuff”
Presenter: Dr. Robert Lochhead, professor and director in the School of Polymers and
High Performance Materials, will discuss the myriad of scientific innovations that
are ushering in a new generation of materials that are smaller, stronger, cleaner
and smarter than anything seen before.
