The Davis Orton Gallery in Hudson, N.Y. has named University of Southern Mississippi adjunct faculty member Betty Press' book I Am Because We Are: African Wisdom In Image and Proverb as being among 20 outstanding photobooks produced in 2011.

The Davis Orton Gallery exhibits photography, mixed media and artist-published photobooks. The gallery's mission is to present a wide range of contemporary artists, from established to emerging, giving them and their work a broader audience. Press' book was chosen through an international photobook competition for the honor.

I Am Because We Areincludes a selection of 125 black and white photos taken in East and West Africa by Press over the past 20 years, as well as proverbs selected by Tanzania native Annetta Miller. It was published in September in partnership with Books for Africa.

Press joined the Department of Art and Design in 2003 as an instructor of photography. She gave a presentation on the book and her work Sept. 8 at the Library of Congress.
