The women of Kappa Delta Sorority at The University of Southern Mississippi kicked the  fall 2011 semester off with sorority recruitment while also promoting International Women's Friendship Month.

In 2009, Kappa Delta Sorority created the Confidence Coalition to mobilize the many organizations, companies and individuals that promote self-esteem and confidence among girls and women.

One of the most important projects managed by the Confidence Coalition is Friendship Month. which is designed to raise awareness of and promote promote the friendships and strong ties between all women.

“Our main goal is to promote friendship between women. There is no reason not to celebrate it,” said Meredith Manguno, Kappa Delta's vice president of public relations. “Celebrating friendship is just a great way to bring women together and boost each other's confidence.”

On Sept. 8, the chapter delivered good luck to every sorority with recruitment 'goody baskets' filled with snacks, candy, a movie for a sisterhood night and a note explaining Friendship Month.

On Sept. 17, the Kappa Deltas kicked off the You Make Me Smile Campaign, with the Kappa Delta women handing out balloons at the Southern Miss football game. The balloons included encouraging and inspiring messages.

On Tuesday, Sept. 27 at 6 p.m. at the Thad Cochran Center, Wynde Fitts of the Office of the First Year Experience (FYE) will speak on Friendship within the Greek Life system and reaching out beyond it. University Police will also present a short interactive self-defense demonstration. This event is open to all women, both Greek and non-Greek.

“We are mainly focusing on friendships within Greek Life this year,” Manguno said. “With delayed recruitment falling in September, we knew it was the perfect time to interact with all of the different chapters on campus. The friendships are what's important, not the differences between our chapters.”
