Metal Artifacts from Twin Towers Making Their Way to Hattiesburg

Metal artifacts from the World Trade Center twin towers that collapsed on Sept. 11, 2001 have begun the trek to Hattiesburg for inclusion in a permanent memorial planned at The University of Southern Mississippi.
Dr. Lou Marciani, director of the National Center for Spectator Sports Safety (NCS4) and Security at Southern Miss and Mark Moran, director, business development at Ingersoll Rand Security Technologies were on hand in New York City Thursday, Aug. 25 to take possession of the steel pieces.
“Being there and able to touch the metal from the twin towers was a very moving experience,” said Marciani. “Having a direct connection to all those people who died on that tragic day just brings home even more the importance of what we're trying to accomplish at the National Center and Southern Miss.”
Special signage has been created and draped across the Marten Transport Ltd., trailer-truck that is bringing the metal to Hattiesburg. Each piece measures 72 inches in length by 12 inches wide by 1-inch thick, weighing approximately 200 pounds. While en route to Hattiesburg, the pieces will make a stop in Atlanta for display outside Turner Field as the Braves host the Washington Nationals on Thursday, Sept. 1.
The pieces are scheduled to arrive in Hattiesburg on Friday, Sept. 2 and officially transferred from the city to the university during halftime of the Golden Eagles' football season opener against Louisiana Tech on Saturday, Sept. 3. Kickoff for that contest is 9 p.m.
