Music, Arts Market Highlight Gala FestivalSouth Weekend in Hattiesburg

FestivalSouth kicks into high gear this weekend with a full-slate of activities set for Saturday, June 11 in downtown Hattiesburg and The University of Southern Mississippi campus.

The festivities begin at 10 a.m. with the inaugural outdoor Arts Market on Front Street in downtown Hattiesburg. Works of art by well-known artists and artisans will be for sale. Artists will demonstrate all types of media, including pottery, sculpture and painting.

On-site demonstrations are scheduled and street performers will provide carnival-style entertainment between local shops. Downtown restaurants and even vendors will provide a variety of food and drink options.

Among the noteworthy events planned:

• 1 p.m. – The French grand ballet “Giselle” will take the stage of the Mannoni Performing Arts Center on The University of Southern Mississippi campus. The ballet resonates with audiences worldwide with universal themes of betrayal, death and forgiveness through the romantic story of a young girl.

• 7:30 p.m. – A command performance of the ultra-hip production of Mozart's “The Magic Flute” at the Saenger Theatre in downtown Hattiesburg. This stunning performance tells the lighthearted tale of romantic love featuring outstanding vocalists from across the country, including several Southern Miss alums on stage and behind the scenes.

• 9:30 p.m. – 1 a.m. – Brownstone's presents the popular “Dancin' in the Streets” at the entrance to the Front Street restaurant. The Heritage Band will perform its brand of Reggae and island rock music.
