University of Southern Mississippi senior Frantz Salomon has been selected as the 2010-11 Student Employee of the Year.

Salomon, a music major originally from Chicago, Ill., works in the Student Activities Hub on the Hattiesburg campus. In addition to his on-campus job, Salomon is the president of the Southern Miss Activities Council, a member of Sigma Nu fraternity and a member of the Spirit of Southern men's a cappella group. He was one of 10 student employees nominated for the annual award.

“I am really humbled, really excited about getting this award,” said Salomon. “It's exciting that I've gotten to take part in so many of these activities and events. It's something that I really love to do.”

Salomon has also been directly involved in the Project Haiti event in which he partnered with the American Red Cross to host a clothing drive and concert to raise money following the earthquake in that devastated region. In addition he has volunteered his time during freshmen move-in weekend and numerous Student Activities events.

“There is not one specific reason or act that stands out for Frantz to win this recognition, but rather a continuous demonstration of dependability and hard work over the past four years,” said Audrey Charoglu, the interim association director for Union and Programs at Southern Miss.

Charoglu describes Salomon as her reliable “go-to guy” and noted his initiative to complete any task with a positive, “can-do” attitude. “When Frantz graduates, there will be a big void to fill, not only in the Office of Student Activities, but also with our student body,” said Charoglu.

Along with the recognition, Salomon received a scholarship, plaque and various other gifts donated by local businesses and departments at Southern Miss.

“I can't thank Audrey enough and the people here,” said Salomon. “They've given me a canvas to paint on and this is something I won't forget. I'm really grateful for the opportunity that they've given me to shine here at Student Activities. It's something I'll keep close to my heart.”
