School of Nursing Director Continues Leadership on Regional Board

Dr. Katherine Nugent, director of the Southern Miss School of Nursing, has recently been appointed a second term as vice president of the Council on Collegiate Education for Nursing of the Southern Regional Education Board (SREB).
The Board is a leading advocate for nursing education, and the SREB Council on Collegiate Education for Nursing helps to expand and strengthen schools of nursingat colleges and universities through projects, conferences and an initiative for online learning. The SREB consists of 16 states, and promotes the full spectrum of nursing education.
Nugent has been a part of the SREB for 24 years, and has served on the advisory board, the board of directors, and most recently on the Council on Collegiate Education for Nursing.
Nugent notes that her desire for taking leadership roles in the nursing profession is to “help to fill the void of nurses needed for quality healthcare in the nation.”
The SREB expects that nearly 40,000 new nurses will be needed each year to provide adequate healthcare in hospitals, clinics, and other local health providers. The estimated shortage of nurses may reach up to 1 million by the year 2020.
Nugent and the School of Nursing are working to make significant strides at meeting the demand for quality nursing education in the region. Through her continued leadership roles on the SREB's Council on Collegiate Education, Nugent will also help to shape the future of nursing education in our nation.
