Andrew Slemaker, a junior majoring in finance at The University of Southern Mississippi, has been awarded the 2011 Mississippi Young Bankers (MYB) Leadership Scholarship.

Each year the MYB committee, a sector of the Mississippi Bankers Association, presents a $1,000 scholarship to an outstanding Mississippi college student majoring in banking and finance.

“I am very surprised, but at the same time very excited about winning this award,” said Slemaker, a Columbia, Miss., native. “It is an honor to be recognized by professionals in my industry. I am also very thankful for those faculty members who have helped me reach this point and believed that I was worthy enough for this award.”

Wayne Kelly, associate professor in the Department of Finance, Real Estate and Business Law at Southern Miss, said Slemaker's humility carried a lot of weight with the MYB selection committee.

“There's a lot of competition for this kind or recognition and one of the key things the Mississippi Young Bankers Association look for in a nominee is character,” said Kelly. “Andrew has all the analytical skills; the right attitude and the performance attributes to be successful in banking or any other career field he chooses.”

The Mississippi Young Bankers Leadership Scholarship has been awarded since 1998. The mission is to not only give students monetary recognition, but also encourage them to pursue banking careers in Mississippi. For more information visit www.msbankers.com
