Southern Chorale to Perform New Works on March 29 at Hattiesburg Church

The Southern Chorale, renowned as the premier chorale ensemble at The University of Southern Mississippi, will perform a free concert at Main Street Baptist Church in Hattiesburg at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 29.

Led by Dr. Gregory Fuller and comprised primarily of upper division voice majors and graduate students in conducting, vocal performance and music education, the 58-member chorale will perform new works by internationally-known composer, James Mulholland, a native of Laurel, Miss.

“James Mulholland's choral works, lavish and rich, are enjoyed by many audiences all over the world,” said Jonathan Jones, doctorate in musical arts candidate in choral conducting at Southern Miss. “It is truly an honor and a privilege to sing new works, which Mulholland composed and specifically chose for the Southern Chorale to perform and record.”

Mulholland is a much-published and performed composer and arranger. His compositions have appeared as required repertoire on more than 40 states' high school choral lists. Mulholland has written commissioned works for many choirs throughout the world including the Los Angeles Children's Choir, the International Children's Choir Festival and the American Choral Directors Association.

Mulholland is currently a music theory/history professor at Butler University's School of Music in Indianapolis, Ind.

In addition to the concert on Tuesday, The Southern Chorale and Spirit of Southern, men's a capella group, were recently selected to perform at the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) Conference on Thursday, March 31 in Jackson, Miss.

 “This is a perfect recruitment opportunity for us,” said Fuller. “The best and brightest high school choral students in the state attend this conference.”
