A bright blue sky and sweltering summer temperatures greeted thousands of students scurrying to class on Wednesday, Aug. 24 -- the first day of the 2011 Fall Semester at The University of Southern Mississippi.

First-year students Alex Smith, of Petal, Tiffany Smith, of Oak Grove and Matthew Fiala, of Stillwater, Minn., found a shady spot between classes underneath the Thad Cochran Center. All expressed excitement about beginning their collegiate careers.

“I'm sick of high school,” said Alex Smith. “I'm ready for a change. I think it's going to be great here at USM.”

Students and the general public are reminded that the Pride of Mississippi Marching Band will hold a preview concert at 7 p.m. Friday at the Centennial Green on campus. The Southern Miss football team opens the 2011 season at home on Sept. 3 against Louisiana Tech in a 9 p.m. kickoff.
