Mon, 04/04/2011 - 05:00pm | By: Charmaine Williams Schmermund

Whether getting a first-ever library card, learning new computer skills or planning a trip, the library is the place where an individual's story begins.

To celebrate National Library Week April 10 – 16, The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast Libraries will host a special event each day of the week. Southern Miss Gulf Coast will feature keynote speaker Ellis Anderson on Tuesday, April 12 from 10 a.m. – noon in room 204 of the library on the Gulf Park campus in Long Beach. Anderson, an award-winning author, will discuss the inner workings of a community confronted by catastrophe with readings from her book, “Under Surge, Under Siege.”

In addition to the keynote speaker, the library will also present the following events throughout National Library Week:

·         April 11 - Poetry reading with Lenny Emmanual from 5:15 – 6:30 p.m. in room 204 of the library

·         April 12 – Author Ellis Anderson from 10 a.m. – noon in room 204 of the library

·         April 13 – Science Café from 6 – 7:30 p.m. in Savannah's Coffee House, located on the first floor of the library

·         April 14 – Film screening of the documentary, “Hollywood Librarian” in room 204 of the library from 2 – 4 p.m. and 6 – 8 p.m.

·         April 15 – Speakeasy from 1 – 3 p.m. This is an open microphone session where guests are welcome to read their favorite poems or excerpts.

In promoting National Library Week, Southern Miss Gulf Coast Libraries encourages everyone to join the nation's libraries and create a personal story at the local library. “Every day, libraries across the country are helping people create their own unique stories,” said Access services librarian Jorge Brown.
