LONG BEACH, Miss. – University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast student Carlton Anderson of Biloxi, left, receives his free Samsung Galaxy Tab™ 10.1 mobile tablet (UTab)from Dr. Frances Lucas, Southern Miss Gulf Coast vice president and campus executive officer.

As an Honors College student, Anderson was one of nearly 30 students selected to receive the tablet with fellow Honors College classmates, Student Government Association officers, Southern Connection Team, and presidents of each student organization.

Partnered withBlackboard Inc. and Samsung Telecommunications America (Samsung Mobile), the goal of the UTab pilot program is to transform the student experience at Southern Miss Gulf Coast by placing a powerful teaching and learning tool into the hands of faculty and students. During the yearlong program, Southern Miss and Blackboard will conduct ongoing surveys, assessments and capture feedback in various areas, including pedagogical impact, functionality, access and curriculum.
