Incoming freshmen and their families turned Century Park residence complex at The University of Southern Mississippi into a whirlwind of activity as the official move-in process got underway Friday, Aug. 19.

A few steps from the front gate, new Golden Eagle James Hayden of Kenner, La., brimmed with anticipation as he and family members waited to begin transporting possessions to one of the dorm rooms. Southern Miss faculty, staff and students aided in the moving process.

“I am both nervous and excited about being here. I've been that way for about the last week,” said Hayden, who plans to study forensic science at Southern Miss. “I knew from the moment I first set foot on this campus that this was the place for me. I can't wait for the semester to begin.”

Hayden will not have to wait much longer as the 2011 fall semester begins on Wednesday, Aug. 24. The move-in process will continue throughout the weekend with members of the Southern Miss football team scheduled to lend a hand from 8:30-9:30 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 20 in the Freshman Quad.

On Sunday, Aug. 21, new students get a welcome from Southern Miss Head Football Coach Larry Fedora at 6 p.m. at M.M. Roberts football stadium (“The Rock”) followed at 6:15 p.m. by the traditional Painting of the Eagle Walk under the east side of the stadium from 6:15-7 p.m. This fun, team-building exercise helps incoming freshmen bond with their classmates.
