The University of Southern Mississippi School of Human Performance & Recreation, in conjunction with the Department of Athletics, will host USA Weightlifting's Level 1 sports performance coach certificate course May 21-22 on the Hattiesburg campus.

Considered the “gold standard” of Olympic weightlifting certifications, course participants will learn the two fundamental lifts – “snatch” and “clean and jerk” – as well as supplemental exercises. This marks the first time Southern Miss has offered a course of this kind.

“I took this course after my sophomore year in college and it fundamentally altered my own training program and how I trained athletes,” said Dr. Brian Gearity, assistant professor in the School of Human Performance & Recreation at Southern Miss. “Everybody who takes this course is always more than satisfied. I hope students and practitioners from Mississippi and surrounding states take advantage of this opportunity.”

The course covers the scientific foundations of weightlifting along with hands-on learning. Topics to be covered include: warm-up and flexibility, biomechanics, exercises and program design. Dr. Kyle Pierce, associate professor of Health and Physical Education at LSU-Shreveport, will serve as the course instructor. Pierce, a world renowned weightlifting coach, directs the USA Weightlifting Center for High Performance and Development at LSU-Shreveport.

Registration for the course ends May 10. The cost to attend is $395. The instruction times are 8 a.m.-6:30 p.m. on May 21 and 8 a.m.-3 p.m. on May 22.
